Building the Future Construction Workforce in NZ

At Willis Construction Group, we understand that the strength of the construction workforce in NZ depends on more than just projects — it depends on people.

That’s why we actively invest in industry partnerships that create real pathways from training into employment.

A recent collaboration with the Ara Education Charitable Trust is a great example of this in action, where students applied their skills by building custom ordered wooden boxes for our team.

From Training to Real-World Construction Experience

One of the biggest challenges in construction training is bridging the gap between classroom learning and on-site application.

Through this project, the students were able to:

  • Apply practical construction and carpentry skills in a real-world setting

  • Work to a live brief aligned with industry expectations

  • Develop an understanding of quality, accuracy, and delivery timelines

  • Gain confidence through hands-on experience

While the task focused on timber fabrication, the principles behind it align closely with formwork training which includes precision, durability, and attention to detail. For the students, these kinds of opportunities go beyond technical skills — they build confidence, work ethic, and a sense of purpose.

Supporting Skills Development and Workforce Growth

New Zealand’s construction sector continues to experience demand for skilled workers, particularly in specialised areas such as formwork systems and concrete construction.

At Willis Construction Group, our involvement in training initiatives reflects our commitment to:

  • Supporting skills development in construction

  • Promoting practical, hands-on learning experiences

  • Contributing to a more resilient and capable workforce

By engaging with students early, we help create smoother transitions from training into employment.

Looking Ahead: Investing in the Future of Construction

This collaboration with Ara Education Charitable Trust highlights the value of connecting education with industry.

As we continue to grow, Willis Construction Group remains committed to:

  • Expanding industry partnerships

  • Supporting construction training initiatives

  • Investing in the future construction workforce in NZ

Because building a stronger industry starts with building capable, confident people.
